J. L. Bartlett
[email protected]

Experience and Education: J. L. is currently working on her Ph.D. in the English program at the University of California, Berkeley. Her areas of concentration include gender, cultural, film, and illness studies, and turn-of-the-century British literature. She has a web site at http://www.jlbartlett.com that is under constant construction, and uses it both as a feeble "presence on the web" reassurance, as well as an opportunity to integrate technology with traditional classroom pedagogy.

From J.L.: "What fascinates me most about women writers is the subtle way in which they inherently draw attention to the demographics of gender, and the intimations underlying human relations, even as they draft. To write as 'a woman' immediately constructs a 'within' and 'without' of existence. An 'us' and a 'them' as well as a 'me' and a 'you.' While all writers are ultimately individuals, and are naturally to be pigeonholed as this or that with great awkwardness and timidity, writing from within a particular gender experience calls attention to the societal machinations surrounding the production of a text, immediately and irrevocably deconstructing the work as it unfolds. The beauty of this organic relationship between a "marginal" work and its signifying environment is, I think, the very life that we crave from art."

Personal Info. you really didn't need to know: J.L. lives with her cats, Aurora and Basil, in a small flat. When not scripting HTML, teaching, reading, writing, watching art films, or singing in her bedroom closet, she enjoys the occasional nap or snack. She hasn't watched a television program in six years. Her CV can be found online.
