Oral Report

Objective:

• To deliver a short oral presentation of your research report in a limited time
• To address questions from the audience
• To apply feedback from your peers to a revision of Paper #5
• To explore and apply options for visual aids in an oral presentation

Assignment:

During the last month of the semester (between Monday, November 22^nd and Friday, December 3^rd) you will deliver a short oral report (10 minutes) to your classmates detailing the position you will be arguing in your research report and explaining how you will use your research to support your perspective.

After you present your report, you will participate in a panel discussion with other students who have delivered reports on that day, fielding questions from the audience about your research, your position on the issue, and your use of research. In other words, you'll actively participate in a "troubleshooting" session, a time to get feedback on areas of strength and weakness in your argument, additional sources, and ways of approaching research. You might also be able to ask for help with specific problems you have encountered in your drafting of Paper #5.

You will be evaluated not only on your own oral presentation (including what you say, how clearly it is organized and delivered, and your observation of time limits), but on your performance as an audience member. As an audience member, be sure to offer comments, ask questions, make suggestions, and listen carefully.

To prepare, be sure you can state concisely your thesis and your major support. Consider possible refutations of your position in case your audience challenges it.
