The Annotated Bibliography

Due: Monday, October 18, 1999

The introduction of the annotated bibliography will

• state the subject & purpose of the proposed study
• identify the scope of the study define key terms and ideas
• explain the rationale for the focus and selection of the bibliography

After the introduction, the bibliography should list 10-15 library sources. Sources should provide the most recent information available on the topic, and emphasis should be on academic sources. You may use only 5 Internet sources, unless you have previously discussed other options with me. Focus primarily on library sources.

Double space the citation and the annotations; quadruple space between entries. The entry for each source will include a bibliographical citation and an annotation. By building an annotated bibliography you will not only provide some evidence of original work, but you will also further practice summary, critical reading, and documentation. Bibliographical citations should follow MLA style of documentation. Annotations should be informative. Descriptions may be included, but primary emphasis must be on information. Use complete sentences. Identify the thesis, purpose, intended audience, and scope of each source. Avoid making overt value judgments about the author, the text, or the main argument. Justify why the source is included in your research.

Do NOT rely completely on printed abstracts from databases or from print material. Abstracts can be highly accurate and highly informative; then again, they can be completely misleading. Look at the originals.

If you change your topic for papers 4 & 5, after handing in the annotated bibliography, you will be required to submit an additional annotated bibliography on your new topic.
