The nineteenth century saw burgeoning groups of women writers; one reason for this increase was that women as readers were becoming more common. Prior to the 19th Century, most women who could read were upper class nobles, and most of what they read was the Bible and commonplace books that taught them how to be "good." But during the 19th century, literacy rates increased dramatically, partly as a result of missionary campaigns to make sure everyone could read their Bible.
